Extending a Kitchen Without Starting Again

This project began with a kitchen Carly King originally designed and installed over ten years ago. As part of a recent home extension, the brief was not to replace it, but to build on what already worked.

By reusing key elements of the existing kitchen and carefully integrating new cabinetry, the result is a space that feels consistent, considered and purpose-built for how the family now lives.

Designing Around the Existing Kitchen

A large portion of the original cabinets and worktops were retained and incorporated into the new layout. This required a detailed understanding of both the original design and the new space, ensuring everything aligned both visually and practically.

Working again with Carly King, who designed the original kitchen, allowed for a seamless continuation of the project. With full knowledge of the initial specification, Carly was able to redesign the space with precision, adapting it to suit the extension while maintaining the integrity of the original scheme.

A Precise Colour Match

One of the key challenges in this project was the cabinetry finish.

The original colour was no longer available, which is often where continuity can be lost. Instead, we colour matched the new cabinetry to the existing units, ensuring a consistent finish across the entire kitchen.

The result is a completely unified look, where there is no visible distinction between the original and newly installed cabinets. It is a clear example of how careful specification and manufacturing can maintain design continuity, even years later.

Expanding the Space for Entertaining

The new extension provided the opportunity to create a larger, more functional kitchen, better suited to the way this family uses the space.

With regular hosting a key part of the brief, the layout has been designed to support both everyday cooking and larger gatherings. There is a clear focus on flow, with generous preparation areas, well-planned storage and enough space for multiple people to use the kitchen comfortably at the same time.

The design centres around a classic shaker door, painted in Sage, offering a timeless finish that works effortlessly across both the original and extended areas of the kitchen.

Updating Key Appliances

Alongside the retained elements, selected upgrades have been introduced to enhance performance and usability.

A new Rangemaster range cooker with induction hob has been installed, paired with a NEFF extractor. These additions bring the kitchen up to current standards while remaining in keeping with the overall design.

A Flexible, Long-Term Approach

This project highlights an important part of our approach. Not every kitchen needs to start from scratch.

With the right planning and manufacturing capability, it is possible to reuse existing elements, match finishes and adapt a kitchen to suit a new space. It allows clients to retain what they value, while still achieving a fully resolved, design-led result.

It also reflects the long-term quality of the kitchens we produce. Ten years on, this kitchen continues to perform and can be confidently built upon.

Designed to Evolve

Every project is different and our role is to respond to that.

Whether it is a full redesign, an extension, or a reconfiguration of an existing space, we offer a flexible service that supports each stage of the process. From colour matching and manufacturing through to layout design and appliance specification, every detail is considered to ensure the final result works as it should.

A kitchen that has evolved, without losing what made it work in the first place.
