SYSTEM SIX DESIGN SERIES - STEVE SMITH

Updated: Mar 11, 2022

Continuing our series on the System Six designers, we asked Steve how he would design his own kitchen. For Steve, the answer was easy. Having recently completed an extension and renovation in his home, Steve has designed his very own System Six kitchen featuring one of the doors within the latest Quantum range. The door chosen by Steve was matt Manston in colours of dust grey and cashmere. Steve included dust grey as he was working with a larger space than before. The darker hue was lifted by the pale shade of cashmere to maintain the impression of a light and airy space. Including a white worktop helped the room appear larger. Steve’s choice in using a matt door was influenced by many factors, one being a personal desire for change from the gloss kitchen that was used in his previous kitchen. The decision to use the Manston door was made as Steve preferred the silkier and smoother matt finish on this door to Linden’s more textured satin finish. Another contributing factor that swayed Steve to choose Manston was budget, as he was renovating and extending his home, the cost of the entire project had to be considered.

With finishing touches in mind, Steve liked the look of a handleless kitchen, however with cost factors and his personal preference for doors with handles, he alternatively opted for the subtle look of trim handles. The dual colours created a unique look, with a contrast of dust grey that went on the island and wall units and cashmere that was featured in the remainder of the kitchen. As Steve included a French style fridge freezer in a stainless-steel finish he chose to have cashmere doors installed beside the appliance so the impact wasn’t lost against the dust grey of the doors. In addition to the fridge freezer, the appliances featured within Steve’s house are all Neff. Steve chose Neff appliances as he’s always believed Neff is a quality brand and offers great cooking options. As he intends to live in his home for at least the next ten years he wanted something that would last and complement the quality of the cabinets. The appliances he opted for include a VarioSteam Oven, a compact oven with microwave, a warming drawer, a five-zone flex induction hob and downdraft extractor.
