PURLEY, A STUDY IN BESPOKE DESIGN
From the outset, the homeowners of this busy Devon family home were clear that they wanted something truly bespoke. A kitchen defined by a custom door style and colour, designed to reflect both their home and the realities of everyday family life, rather than following short-term trends.
They chose System Six Kitchens with confidence, knowing our in-house manufacturing and design expertise would allow us to create the bespoke door style and tailored kitchen they envisioned, without compromise. The result is a space that feels current yet comfortably timeless, with craftsmanship and longevity at its core.
THE KITCHEN
The main kitchen is centred around the Purley door, with wall cabinetry painted in Taupe Grey, paired with a bespoke Purley stained oak island that introduces warmth and depth. This contrast gives the space balance, allowing the cabinetry to feel elegant without becoming overpowering.
Worktops throughout the kitchen are Carrara Venatino Unistone, finished with a bespoke edge that softens the overall look while remaining practical for everyday use. The island is designed to work hard, offering generous storage, comfortable seating and a built-under oven, making it as functional as it is social.
Inside the island, bespoke oak stained cutlery drawers, an integrated knife block sit and oak stained dovetail drawer boxes, add a layer of craftsmanship that is felt as much as it is seen. Storage has been carefully planned across the kitchen, including a baking tray drawer with individual compartments, ensuring every item has its place.
Traditional detailing is woven throughout. All end panels are finished in tongue and groove, while at the back of the kitchen, chamfered square posts frame the large AGA, grounding it within the room. Above, painted corbels sit either side of the AGA, to support a substantial mantel, creating a strong focal point. An Antique Glass splashback behind the AGA reflects light and adds subtle character.
Fluted glass wall cabinets to the right of the kitchen introduce texture and visual interest, while brass accents are used thoughtfully throughout. Every cabinet is finished with an Elegance moulded skirting plinth, with brass skiffers fitted to each corner to protect the plinths while adding a refined finishing detail.
To the left of the kitchen, a series of concealed features elevates the design. A hidden bar cabinet includes LED sensor lighting, glass shelving and an Antique Glass back, creating a discreet yet striking space for entertaining. Alongside this sits open shelving that matches the island finish and houses the fridge freezer, followed by a hidden baking larder.
Even the smallest details have been considered. Tucked neatly into the end of a tongue and groove panel is a secret push-to-open key and letter cabinet, an unexpected feature that reflects the level of bespoke design throughout.
Practicality has not been overlooked. A tea and coffee cupboard keeps everyday essentials organised, while pull-out bins to the left of the sink include a concealed drawer above, perfect for storing bin bags. A Quooker boiling water tap in Patinated Brass pairs beautifully with the large Belfast sink, reinforcing the blend of traditional style and modern convenience.
To the right of the kitchen, two large pocket doors open to reveal twin hidden wine racks and a walk-in pantry, allowing the kitchen to transition effortlessly between everyday family life and entertaining.
THE PANTRY
The walk-in pantry is finished in Holne Heritage Green, creating a rich, calm space that feels connected to the kitchen while standing confidently on its own.
Carrara Venatino Unistone worktops and shelving with a bespoke edge continue into the pantry, supported by Hendell & Hendell brushed brass shelf brackets. Under-lit LED shelves wrap around the room, providing both task lighting and a warm ambient glow.
The client has beautifully dressed the space with jars of dry ingredients, turning storage into a feature. Purpose-built shelving to the left houses labelled baskets, keeping everything organised while maintaining a relaxed, lived-in feel. This is a pantry designed not just to store, but to be enjoyed.
THE BOOTROOM
The bootroom is finished in Belsay Beaded Reed Green, offering a practical yet welcoming transition space within the home.
To the right, open shelving provides generous storage for baskets and shoes, keeping everyday items easy to access. On the left, a built-in seating area includes drawer storage beneath, with a tongue and groove back panel adding texture and continuity with the kitchen.
Opposite, additional storage includes two tall cabinets with hanging rails for coats and jackets, flanked by a lower central unit offering further drawer storage. Every element has been designed to manage daily comings and goings while maintaining the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail seen throughout the rest of the home.
