A CORNISH KITCHEN RENOVATION
Designed by Lily O’Sullivan as part of a wider house renovation just over the Cornish border, this Purley Light Grey kitchen transforms two previously separate rooms into one bright, sociable space filled with traditional detailing, generous storage and a statement Lacanche range cooker.
THE DESIGN
Forming part of a wider renovation of this home just over the Cornish border, the project presented an opportunity to completely rethink how the kitchen and dining areas were used. What had previously been two separate rooms has been opened up to create one generous space, bringing in more natural light and providing plenty of room for cooking, storage and hosting family and friends.
Lily O’Sullivan designed the kitchen using our Purley door in Light Grey, creating a soft and timeless foundation for the traditional scheme. Curved cabinetry, moulded skirting plinths and Hendel & Hendel handles introduce furniture-inspired detailing, while oak dovetail drawers bring natural warmth and craftsmanship to the interiors.
At the heart of the design is a beautiful Lacanche range cooker, framed by a bespoke canopy with a traditional mantle and corbels. The canopy incorporates discreet push-to-open storage doors, making use of the space above while maintaining its classic appearance. A NEFF extractor is integrated within the canopy and completely concealed from view, allowing modern extraction to sit quietly behind the more traditional detailing.
Bianco Piracema granite is used extensively throughout the room, forming the worktops, upstands, splashback and windowsills to create a cohesive finish. Around the sink, recessed drainage grooves have been cut into the granite on either side, providing a practical draining area without introducing a separate drainer or interrupting the natural character of the stone.
Storage has been carefully considered throughout Lily’s design. Pull-out bins keep everyday waste neatly concealed, while a dedicated storage cupboard features oak spice racks, making smaller ingredients easy to organise and access. Combined with the generous cabinetry created by the new open-plan layout, the kitchen provides ample storage while retaining a calm and uncluttered appearance.
THE RESULT
Opening the former kitchen and dining room into one space has completely changed how this part of the home can be enjoyed. Natural light can now travel more freely through the room, while the larger footprint provides a welcoming setting for everyday family life and entertaining.
The finished kitchen celebrates traditional design without sacrificing modern practicality. From the Lacanche and bespoke canopy to the curved cabinetry, oak dovetail drawers and beautifully detailed granite surfaces, each element contributes to a kitchen with genuine character. Clever storage and concealed modern appliances ensure it performs effortlessly behind the scenes, resulting in a space designed to be lived in, cooked in and shared.
